Global Wines dba Artisan Wines
Global Wines was founded in 1989 by Michael Fallow, a university trained winemaker and wine entrepreneur who made wine in Napa Valley California for 15 years before expanding his business scope. Global Wine Company has encompassed but never replaced the original company and guiding philosophy of Artisan Wines begun in 1983, a visionary wine making and marketing company started by Michael Fallow and built by the team of Michael Fallow and Jeffrey Caldeway, a graphic designer specializing in wine labels with a gift for marketing. The early conception of Artisan Wine Company was the three tiered production of California wines under the labels of Michael's, Cruvinet and Ultravino plus a component of small producer European wines marketed under our own label, Cru Artisan. The goal and philosophy of Artisan Wines has always been to focus on the smaller and artisanal production of wine with a belief that in winemaking smaller is generally better as a means of the expression of the original grapes and the benefits of personal and individualized care.
Artisan Wine Company evolved and was incorporated into Global Wine Company in 1989 as the California negociant division.
Fulfilling that larger concept a passion for European wines brought Michael Fallow to New York in 1991 where he worked with Tricana Imports, an importer and distributor of small, high quality wine producers of Italy, France and Spain. Other Global Wines enterprises included the establishment of a distributorship of wines in the West Indies, the Nevis Island Wine Company, with Michael Todd who later founded the wine publication Grapezine; consulting on wine growing and production on the Hawaiian island of Lanai; and a marketing collaboration with the firm of Wilson Daniels for promoting their Madiera island wines from producer Henriques & Henriques; consulting and flying winemaker for John Sambrooke's Canadian wine venture in the new Ontario growing region of Prince Edward County.
Global Wines began operating under a new partnership in 1997 with Gavin Gracey, a food and beverage specialist from South Africa, and re-invigorated the Artisan Wine Company as a producer of Global Wines' California wines under the Harvest and CruVinet labels.
In 2000 Michael Fallow and Gavin Gracey joined with wine importer Sam Levitas of Tricana Imports bringing the distribution of Tricana's Italian, French and Spanish wines in northern California. The well appointed portfolio of wines included the Italian Selections, a portfolio built with dedication and great knowledge of their Italian roots over 25 years plus Giles Fenczak's later discoveries of French and Spanish wines plus a small representation of California, Oregon and Virginia wines.
In late 2004 Tricana Imports' Sam Levitas took control of the distribution operation begun by Global Wines and continued operating under the new title of Global-Tricana Wines.
Michael Fallow began exploring the wine scene in Argentina and
in 2005 Global Wine Company met a working partner, Federico Bensadon of Mendoza, from the then emerging wine market of Mendoaz,Argentina, predicting it would one day replace Australia's importance in the US for red wine, and began exporting Argentina wines to the US and Canada.
Currently Global Wines has opened a small, international office in Europe based in Spain where it seeks to develop producer relationships and leverage it's broad experience to introduce it's portfolio of wines into the emerging wine market of China. Global Wines has begun the search for a working import partner. Global's Director of Sales located in mainland China is now leading the development of importing wines into China.
