Alicia Rojas Wines of Rioja Baja, Spain

Collado de la Estrella
Sheltered by the Pyrenees from the cold winds of the northeast, La Rioja receives the beneficial influences of two seas; the Atlantic Ocean through the low mountains, and the Mediterranean Sea along Erbo's riverside. Here, in this privileged environment, is the "Collado de la Estrella" vineyard, between the townships of Ausejo and Molinos de Ocon.
Alicia Rojas is a direct descendant of Gonzales Rojas, who began his work in the world of wine in 1920. His first traditional cellar was in Laguardia, where his first wines were aged in oak tanks and barrels and were of such outstanding quality that French traders went there only to buy it. Because of his "know how" he was named consultant at the Administration Council of well-known wineries in Rioja Alta in Haro. Through his relationship with Bordeaux, he realized the importance of making wine with his own grapes from his own vineyard. With this philosophy in mind, he bought Marques de Legarda, the big hunting property of 1000 hectares and transformed it into vineyards. Today the children of Sig. Rojas, have enlarged on these vineyards and built a winery within the property to continue with his tradition of making wines of outstanding quality and taste.
Alicia Rojas chooses sunny slopes with high quality soil to grow her vines. Careful pruning is done at the beginning of the growing cycle and after they sprout, the plants are closely controlled in order to obtain a completely developed, tasty, and aromatic fruit. Twenty hectares of the vineyard Collado de la Estrella are cultivated organicallys, following the CEE2092/91 Rule. This rule allows only organic fertilizers and no herbicides or pesticides, using only processes and authorized products that compliment the environment.
