Tenuta Barone La Lumia Sicily, Italy

La Lumia

"... from the fields of Geloi, the strip of land of Sicily, which extends between Agrigento, Licata and the ancient Terranova, where history is one with myth, we promise to bring to your table, wherever you may be, a range of wines made from indigenous vines that from the very first taste will unveil a three thousand year old legend, wines produced in such small quantities we feel that it is important for you to know that we could soon run out. "
All of Sicily is steeped in Greek and Phoenician history ; Licata, looked at from this vantage point boasts the most antique origins of the region and dates back to the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations. The proximity to the sea, the fact that the river Salso - Himera is navigable, and the fertility of the regions plains, enabled the easy settlement in the area of these populations.Even the first vines date back to the Mycenaean period, when according to legend, King Minos fleeing from his enemy Daedalus was a guest of King Cocalo who it appears was residing in what is now present day Licata.Around the year 690 B.C., the Rhodesians and the Cretans founded Gela, using the production and the selling of their wines to created opulence and wealth in the area. These wines were obtained by vines they themselves had brought with them. The downfall of their society began with the arrival of the Arab populations, however the new arrivals were not truly Arabs but Berbers. This substantially weakened the potentially destructive effects of the invasion on Licata itself.Historical sources indicate that Fredrick the II King of the Sicilies, favored the presence of "Greek" wine at his table, or more accurately wine produced in the Greek style, using grapes that came from vines brought over from ancient Greece and abundantly available on the hills surrounding Gela and Licata. From the Baron La Lumia's estate one can feast ones eyes on the rolling plains constantly kissed by the sun and on the crystalline sea whose horizon disappears between Malta and the Tunisian coast ; but more importantly inhale the perfume of this legendary must. The ambitious goal of Nicolo La Lumia the current owner and manager of the winery is to bring to life, through his love for this land and his attachment to its antique heritage, a wine that is in itself a myth. (Resveratrol is a substance found in red wine, that according to U.S University studies, is good for the heart. Laboratory analysis conducted on the red wines of the Tenuta La Lumia have revealed that, most probably due to the most favorable conditions of the soil and climate conditions of the area, the resvertarol content is 3-4 times higher than in other red wines. A modern day elixir! We are the first to put on our labels "CONTAINS A HIGH LEVEL OF RESVERATOL".)

Don Toto
is a grand, inspired wine; decisive, strong, and generous. It is destined to leave its mark as did the man whose portrait graces the bottle's label. Don Toto La Lumia is the founder of the noble house and a true innovator. At the end of the 1800's, when Don Toto was head of the La Lumia family he had already introduced modern farming machinery onto his lands. He also installed the first telephone system in order to link the properties overseers to the family palace. With the help of master wine makers he began to modernize his vineyards, plant new vines, and most important of all began to bottle his wine. The first person in Licata to do so. It is Barone Nicolo La Lumia, Don Toto's great- grandson, today a wine producer of high acclaim, who decided to dedicate his most full bodied wine to Don Toto. It is in honor of this innovative spirit that it was decided to distribute this wine and the others included in the Family collection exclusively using the internet: a perfect mix of antique family traditions and modern technology. A highly prized wine made using only the Nero d'Avola grape. The aging process is completed in oak barrels. The wine has a high content of resveratrol.
