Montechiari - Lucca
The Montechiari family winery, that has been producing
wines for the last three centuries, is located
in the charming medieval village of Montecarlo
in the region of Lucca in Tuscany. The history
of this town is known for its cultivation of wines
and olives back as far as Roman times. Documents
dating back to the year 1000 AD prove that the
culture of wine was already very successful at
that time. In the 14th & 15th centuries these
wines were sold on the market in Florence where
they demanded the highest prices. In fact it is
known that the Medicis, who stayed in their chateau
in this area several times each year, preferred
their wines and grapes from Monte Carlo. In 1978,
the current owner, Moreno Panattoni took over
the winery. He combines all the old traditions
with the most modern vinification technologies
to obtain the very best quality wines. The climate
is this region is very mild with fresh breezes
blowing from the East in the mornings and from
the West in the evenings. The soil is hard and
compact, made up partly of clay particles, but
mostly a mixture of sandstone and limestone. While
this soil is difficult to work, it is very suitable
for viticulture. The relatively high elevation
of Fattoria di Montechiari's vineyards at 200
meters, plus the mature age of his vines, must
help. His Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc
vineyards are 23-years-old, his Pinot Noir vineyard
is more than 20 and his Merlot vineyard is more
than 10. Panattoni's Belgian heritage may also
give him a broader perspective about wine quality
than is accessible to other native Lucca producers.
