Domaine Virely-Rouget
At the beginning of the century Louis Virely came
to Pommard and took over the Domaine of his in-laws,
having come from an old family of winemakers himself.
In 1926 he bought the parcel of Pommard 1er Cru
"Clos des Arvelets". In 1951, his son Bernard
took over part of the Domaine and married a woman
from Meursault, who brought with her the appellation
"Les Charmes". Together they bought and replanted
"Les Clos de l'Ermitage" in Beaune as well as
diverse parcels in the village of Pommard, and
the Domaine Virely-Rouget was born.
Today, their son Patrick continues the family
tradition. With 3 acres of "Clos des Arvelets",
Virely-Rouget is the biggest owner of the appellation
1er Cru Arvelets.
The Meursault 1er Cru "Les Charmes" vineyards
are composed of argilo-calcareous soil (chalk)
with a predominance of white marnes which is great
for the production of white wines.
Virely-Rouget owns .40 of an acre of the appellation
"Les Charmes". The grapes are specially selected,
hand harvested, and fermented in oak barrels under
temperature control.
The Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Arvelets" vineyards
are made up of hard calcareous (hard chalk) and
mano-calcareous soil which is favorable to the
Pinot Noir.
Specially selected and hand harvested, the grapes
are then macerated on the skins, in wooden vats,
for about 15 days, in order to extract the greatest
color and flavors. After the destemming and pressing,
the juice is fermented in wooden vats and then
aged in oak barrels. The wine is then filtered
naturally using egg whites which aid the sediment
to fall to the bottom.
